Adventures in the e.l.f. Cosmetics store.

I finally had the time to meet one of my best friends in NYC. When she asked me what I would like to see I told her:

 1. Sailors (it was Fleet Week and 2. The e.l.f. Cosmetics Store (because it exists). This company is expanding and opening more stores including one that will open right by me in July. But it was not July yet and I’m impatient. So off we went.

Here’s what I got:

I am seriously the worst photographer when it comes to makeup blog posts. What is that?

I cannot resist lipstick. It’s an addiction as deep as my love for coffee and icecream, sometimes together, sometimes separately. Here is a brief description of the lippies.

  • The long tube is a dual sided lipstic called “I Love Pinks!”
  • The clear tube is called Touch of Blush.
  • The gloss is Pageant Princess
  • The foundation is not a lipstick (duh) but it it is the acne formula. My breakouts are pretty good now, but I figured it could be a good lightweight foundation.
  • The Rose gold liquid eyeshadow was disappointing. It barely stays on and you have to layer it to show up.

Here are some lip swatches:

ANNNNDSome live action shots:

There you have it. Some e.l.f products for you, and most are worth the couple of bucks they cost. Barely any sailor sightings though. Booo

NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer =Got You Glowing

I’m confused. I’m the girl who needs her foundation oil and fragrance free or her skin freaks out either immediately (bumps) or after a day or two (cystic acne). Yet for the last week I’ve been using a concealer made with coconut oil and nothing. has. happened. Nothing. Infact, my skin looks better and has less clogging overall.

Oh, and I’m using it as foundation. Yes that’s right, it’s madness! Let’s have a look see:

I’m currently using shade 4 which is a touch dark but I feel so pale this winter that I don’t mind. Shade 3 is too perfect and I feel like I look anemic or I may pass out from the vapors.

This tube of concealer is $6.00 at Ulta. A little goes a long way, so I have a feeling it’s going to last a while
I can’t tell you why this is working out for me, but it is. Maybe the cold weather is making my skin need oil? If you’re dry, try this out. If you are combo/oily keep it minimally applied. I think applying this under the eye is not enough and it is not super flattering. However, as a glowy foundation it rules.

Check it out:

Makes dry skin happy! Now if only the cold would stop pissing me off.

MUA Professional Brush Cleansing Balm

Goats are the coolest. If you doubt that statement, google “baby goats” and take in all the cuteness:

And hello, goat cheese!

(Now I want goat cheese)

What you may not be aware of, is that goat’s milk makes for an excellent makeup brush cleanser.

Yes, but don’t go to Whole Foods and drop a five dollar bottle of G-milk on your brushes. Consider this brush cleanser instead:

Picture from CVS.com

While I’m not sold on everything from MUA, I think this brush cleanser is amazing. It does the job quicker than Beauty Blender brand and it costs less. ($10.00 without coupons or sales). Plus it’s solid, so it’s easy to travel with.

Let’s look at more from CVS.com:

How about some ingredients?

I bet your wondering how this smells. Well, definitely not like goat, goat milk, or goat cheese! It has a clean perfumed scent that just smells fresh.

It cleans brushes in a flash, and if you have any white-haired brushes, it gets out every trace of makeup.

It makes sense that stubborn makeup stains stand no chance against a balm made from a stubborn animal’s milk.  All of this may sound weird, but trust me. It’s not baaaaaaad

I’m lame.

Burt’s Bees New Lipstick: It’s the Bees Knees!

It’s about time that Burt graduated to a real lipstick. It started with lip balms, then lip tints, then lip crayons, and now grown-up lipsticks. Hallelujah! Welcome to the present Burt’s Bees.

These lipsticks are 100% natural. That’s right my crunchy friends, you can now wear a natural lipstick at a reasonable price. Personally, I’m not obsessed with using natural products. I’m actually drinking Diet Coke as I write this post. I may as well be doing lines of Sweet N’Low. #BadExample

Let’s have a look:

* Picture from Ulta.com

Of the 12 colors I own three: Lily Lake, Brimming Berry, and Magenta Rush. (Sunset Cruise and Fuschia Flood were returned because they were a bit light. Oh yes, and these colors aren’t as dark as they seem so keep that in mind.)

Magenta Rush is deep pink. It’s a better choice for those who can’t wear the Fuschia Flood color. Lily Lake is a beautiful mauve lip tone, perfect for every day. Brimming Berry is a Berry red and it has gotten me the most compliments.

Let’s talk pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Very moisturizing
  • Pretty pigments
  • Low price ($8.99 without any coupons)
  • 100% Natural

Cons:

  • Not a long lasting lipstick
  • Still more like a highly pigmented balm as opposed to a traditional lipstick
  • Packaging is bulky and weird.

It’s what’s inside that counts:

*From Ulta.com

Ulta coupon hack: Buy 1 of these lipsticks at $8.99 with an Essence of Beauty Lipliner at 1.49 and use the 5 dollar off a 10.00 purchase coupon. I kinda did that a few times 🙊.

As I mentioned earlier, these colors appear dark but go on a little lighter. That being said, if you are like me you’ll want to choose the three colors I selected. You know, if you have moderately fair olive skin, dark hair, an addiction to Diet Coke, and a talent to make any situation awkward. Or just maybe the first two in that list.

Brows Gone Wild 🐛🐛

What the hell has happened to eyebrows on social media?

There, I said it. Look, I get the whole “Eyebrows are the frame to the windows of the soul” idea (I love when the makeup world gets deep btw), but sometimes frames are so heavy they are going to make the whole foundation crack.

There are people out there who do amazing eyebrows. I love these looks because they are polished and pretty and do not OWN the face.

*Side note: There are plenty of bad pictures of brows on Insta. However I am not going to post those because although I’m snarky, I’m not a jerk. AND, I’m far from perfect. I make mistakes too.

Here is a visual story about my own recent adventure with a brow-dip fail:

So I see this brand of brow pomade at CVS called Ardell, and I’m intrigued. I’ve always used liners and powders, but I was curious to try a pomade. AND it was around 7 dollars and I had a 25% coupon- sold. I get home and decide to just wing it and not even look at the directions. I lightly dipped the spool into the jar and brush on my brows.

This is what happened:

Edit

Full on Cara Delevingne without her looks or money.

Right before I could wash it off the Verizon guy comes to my apartment to fix my TV I’m sure he wanted to fix the brows too.

I decided to try again today. Instead of slapping it on blindly, I read the directions and achieved a normal human-being brow.

*One brow is slightly more structured. I’m still trying to find a balance.

Let’s look at a side by side for proof that normal human-being brows are the way to go. Oh, and also a reminder to always follow directions:

We all can make mistakes. However, it’s important to learn from them, and more importantly, learn not to post these mistakes on Instagram with the hashtag #browsonfleek.

Never Been Concealed: Daily Brightener from Flower Cosmetics

Drew Barrymore. People who grew up in the 80’s knew her this way:

Heh heh. That picture is great. Oh internet, you rule.

Kids of the 90’s remember her this way:

(Fun movie. GREAT soundtrack)

And the teens of today know her as the founder of this makeup company:

For those of you unaware, Drew Barrymore has an awesome line of makeup available at Walmart. Now, I’m not really a Walmart kind of gal (team Target, all the way). I think it boils down to not being able to tolerate the smell of Subway sandwiches that seem to haunt the entire store. However, I will drag myself in there to check out stuff from Flower Cosmetics and Hard Candy.

Here is today’s latest find:

Daily Brightening Undereye Cremè

The side of this product has the name abbreviated to “DB” which makes my inner twelve year old want to giggle. Get it?

Ok, I’m immature. Annnnyywayy…

This is an eye brightener/concealer/treatment made with caffeine and hyalouronic acid. Let’s take a photo journey, shall we?

No makeup. So sad.

Prepping with my favorite eye cream.

(Fake surprised face). Lots of product comes out so be prepared!

Left side has foundation blended over it. I recommend doing that.

So far, I’m a fan. The one downside is the limited shades. I am the darkest shade, which is a D4. I’d have to say overall, the whole line could use shade expansions to reflect more diversity. Get to working on that Miss Drew!

That’s all for tonight. I’ve done a bang up job of procrastinating starting my assignment. Really, if they gave awards for that I’d win everything.

Super Stay Better Skin Foundation.

Just when I was about ready to get down on one knee and propose to my bottle of Maybelline Super Stay Makeup, they changed the formula! This! This is why I have makeup abandonment issues!

Now, I don’t know if it is officially phased out, but I have seen it marked on clearance so that is usually an obvious hint.

Here’s it is on the far right, next to its replacement:

Super Stay Better Skin Makeup.

It’s ok. Not the worst, but not the best. I basically have three requirements for a foundation:

  1. Don’t break me out.
  2. Be oil/fragrance free
  3. Don’t break me out.

This new foundation passes that test, so I’m pleased in that regard. This makeup is made with Actyl C, which is a more stable version of vitamin C (according to the bottle.) The claims are that it can help with spots, bumps, dullness, and redness in three weeks time. I’ve been using this stuff on my tzone for a week, so in two more weeks I expect to have an amazingly gorgeous tzone- or at least a better version.

As for its claims of “Better Skin”, I don’t know. I don’t need my makeup to improve my skin, I just don’t want it to screw it up.

Here are some swatches for the swatchaholics:

There is no exact color match for the old Classic Beige. There is something called Natural Beige but I found it to be a little too dark. The Nude Beige is peachy/pink (more peach) and the Warm Nude is a bit yellow. I can get away with that for the summer, but my cold weather color is Nude Beige.

Pros

  • Didn’t break me out.
  • Decent staying power.
  • Supposed good for skin ingredients.

Cons

  • Thicker than the old formula.
  • Not truly a matte foundation like the old formula.
  • Not a perfect color match like the old formula.

I’ve heard mixed reviews on the interwebs for this one. Some bloggers like it, and some feel it is a tragedy. I think I read something about caking on the upper lip and how it nearly destroyed someone.

Anyway, I say give it a shot and if it doesn’t work out, we can storm the headquarters at Maybelline and demand they bring the old formula back. Hopefully the new makeup works out for both of us, because I’m lazy and that other plan is just exhausting.

Till next time…
