Instagram vs Reality

I’m a makeup artist who rarely wears a great deal of makeup. Most days I run out of the house to get Smarshmucks without much makeup on at all (I bet you can’t guess that name. #slick). Many times I’m people watching, but sometimes I engage in conversation. When I tell people that in addition to grad school, one of my two or three jobs is being a makeup artist, I get a puzzled look. This is because I usually look like this:

Ok, picture non-styled hair. I’m not that brave to do no makeup AND scrub hair in this post.

My usual “I tried” look is not much more:

(Foundation, blush, mascara and a strong lip).

But today I had a conversation with a gentleman about makeup, particularly Instagram styled makeup. I explained my appreciation for the art form, but how I would never leave the house that way. This is mostly because I’m just not comfortable; however, I was looking for an excuse to procrastinate and put my nervous energy to good use. )I start the second two classes of my four classes summer tomorrow. Ay yah yahhhy.)

So here is a heavy makeup look I created and I will list the products below:

This is the amount of product I used

Details:

❣Beyond Perfecting #9 Neutral. My summertime tan color. Usually I’m a 4 in the winter, 6.5 in spring/early summer, and now 9 after a tan.

❣Chubby in the Nude: Clove as contour.

❣ Dark blush in elf quad

❣Shadows: purple from NYX on lid. Mystery, transforming pearl on lid from itcosmetics, fate nd desire blended in.

❣ Maybelline waterproof mascara

❣ Urban Decay vice lipstick in Moshpit.

Verdict: Too heavy. I think I will stick to my usual. FYI Moshpit is an awesome lipstick. I will wear it alone, without competing eyes to throw it all off.

Till next time. 💋 Smooches!

NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer =Got You Glowing

I’m confused. I’m the girl who needs her foundation oil and fragrance free or her skin freaks out either immediately (bumps) or after a day or two (cystic acne). Yet for the last week I’ve been using a concealer made with coconut oil and nothing. has. happened. Nothing. Infact, my skin looks better and has less clogging overall.

Oh, and I’m using it as foundation. Yes that’s right, it’s madness! Let’s have a look see:

I’m currently using shade 4 which is a touch dark but I feel so pale this winter that I don’t mind. Shade 3 is too perfect and I feel like I look anemic or I may pass out from the vapors.

This tube of concealer is $6.00 at Ulta. A little goes a long way, so I have a feeling it’s going to last a while
I can’t tell you why this is working out for me, but it is. Maybe the cold weather is making my skin need oil? If you’re dry, try this out. If you are combo/oily keep it minimally applied. I think applying this under the eye is not enough and it is not super flattering. However, as a glowy foundation it rules.

Check it out:

Makes dry skin happy! Now if only the cold would stop pissing me off.

Ten days until Valentine’s Day!

Mood:

Well, that’s a bit much.

Valentine’s Day may not be tons of fun, but you know what is?

This:

A new, seasonal lipstick from Kiko Milano. If that packaging isn’t adorable enough, look at the inside:

LOOK AT IT!!!!!

It’s heart shaped ❤️.

This lipstick is only 7 bucks and it is the plum lipstick of Kiko Milano’s Endless Love collection.

(Btw I’ve now included two old-people references in this post. The young millennials are going to be so lost.)

This super fun lippy (ew, did I just write that?) comes in 6 shades. The one I chose is Passion Plum. I love it because of the subtle gold flecks mixed in.

Let’s see how it looks:

(You can see a bit of the sheen)

Pros and Cons time!

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Adorable packaging
  • Beautiful shade (Passion Plum)
  • Non-drying.
  • The packaging! 😍😍😍

Cons:

  • I don’t think they have a shade like this all the time 👎🏻 It’s easily the prettiest shade in the whole store.

Happy Valentine’s Day in advance, and may we all find:

New Chubby Stick Foundation From Clinique!

I’ve been waiting for these to come out for some time now. Any of my makeup artist friends know that I am a fan of crayons and anything portable, also lipsticks, lipgloss, shadow palettes, ok fine. I’m a makeup addict. But what I love more than makeup is makeup that’s convenient.

I present:

Clinique Chubby in the Nude foundation Stick

(Record scratching sound). Yeah, that’s the name. Can’t say it’s a winner. Not to be offensive, but don’t go googling the product by its name. It’s a little scandalous.

My personal name I would offer for this is Fuller Foundation. But alas, I do not work for marketing. 😏

Annnnnyway, let’s look at a few swatches.

(I did this quickly at Sephora. There are more shades, but this is Alabaster, Chamois, Clove and Beige. *Insert funny adjectives before each name. I kinda forgot them). #bloggeroftheyear.

My shade is #7 which is the Capricious Chamois. That is the third shade from the lightest and it has golden undertones (but not super yellow).

Here’s how it looks under my eyes, on my nose, and covering a blemish on my cheek.

Your eyes do not deceive you, that is a picture of Yanni photobombing me. It was drawn by my talented friend, Hermes Almeida. To be technical it is a picture of Yanni, Rev. Run and Prince Charles in Run DMC gear. Long story, but it’s kind of awesome.

First Impression Pros and Cons:

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Creamy
  • Good coverage
  • Oil free

Cons:

  • Does not fully cover undereye area but it does a decent job.
  • The product name. That name!

Retails for 24 bucks (department store pricing) but Clinique is always a safe bet for sensitive skin so it’s worth it.

MUA Professional Brush Cleansing Balm

Goats are the coolest. If you doubt that statement, google “baby goats” and take in all the cuteness:

And hello, goat cheese!

(Now I want goat cheese)

What you may not be aware of, is that goat’s milk makes for an excellent makeup brush cleanser.

Yes, but don’t go to Whole Foods and drop a five dollar bottle of G-milk on your brushes. Consider this brush cleanser instead:

Picture from CVS.com

While I’m not sold on everything from MUA, I think this brush cleanser is amazing. It does the job quicker than Beauty Blender brand and it costs less. ($10.00 without coupons or sales). Plus it’s solid, so it’s easy to travel with.

Let’s look at more from CVS.com:

How about some ingredients?

I bet your wondering how this smells. Well, definitely not like goat, goat milk, or goat cheese! It has a clean perfumed scent that just smells fresh.

It cleans brushes in a flash, and if you have any white-haired brushes, it gets out every trace of makeup.

It makes sense that stubborn makeup stains stand no chance against a balm made from a stubborn animal’s milk.  All of this may sound weird, but trust me. It’s not baaaaaaad

I’m lame.

Burt’s Bees New Lipstick: It’s the Bees Knees!

It’s about time that Burt graduated to a real lipstick. It started with lip balms, then lip tints, then lip crayons, and now grown-up lipsticks. Hallelujah! Welcome to the present Burt’s Bees.

These lipsticks are 100% natural. That’s right my crunchy friends, you can now wear a natural lipstick at a reasonable price. Personally, I’m not obsessed with using natural products. I’m actually drinking Diet Coke as I write this post. I may as well be doing lines of Sweet N’Low. #BadExample

Let’s have a look:

* Picture from Ulta.com

Of the 12 colors I own three: Lily Lake, Brimming Berry, and Magenta Rush. (Sunset Cruise and Fuschia Flood were returned because they were a bit light. Oh yes, and these colors aren’t as dark as they seem so keep that in mind.)

Magenta Rush is deep pink. It’s a better choice for those who can’t wear the Fuschia Flood color. Lily Lake is a beautiful mauve lip tone, perfect for every day. Brimming Berry is a Berry red and it has gotten me the most compliments.

Let’s talk pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Very moisturizing
  • Pretty pigments
  • Low price ($8.99 without any coupons)
  • 100% Natural

Cons:

  • Not a long lasting lipstick
  • Still more like a highly pigmented balm as opposed to a traditional lipstick
  • Packaging is bulky and weird.

It’s what’s inside that counts:

*From Ulta.com

Ulta coupon hack: Buy 1 of these lipsticks at $8.99 with an Essence of Beauty Lipliner at 1.49 and use the 5 dollar off a 10.00 purchase coupon. I kinda did that a few times 🙊.

As I mentioned earlier, these colors appear dark but go on a little lighter. That being said, if you are like me you’ll want to choose the three colors I selected. You know, if you have moderately fair olive skin, dark hair, an addiction to Diet Coke, and a talent to make any situation awkward. Or just maybe the first two in that list.

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer = 1 Amazing Product

Every so often I churn out a blog post for the 7 followers I think I have. One is actually my mom, so really I should be saying 6. Anyway, if you follow this blog you may remember that  I posted on this foundation when it first came out. I compared it against Stila’s foundation/concealer combo. The Clinique version won, hands down. Despite its victory, I got away from using it on the daily. (Btw that’s  an expression that I’m 20 years too late for.) But it really is an amazing foundation and this post will review the reasons why.

Picture: Clinique.com

First, let’s look at some customers wearing Beyond Perfecting in various shade levels:

And me, wearing my new favorite shade, 6.5 Buttermilk:

I generally use this foundation under my eyes, and in the tzone. The picture on the right is a full application that I used on stage.

Pros:

I really love how long this foundation lasts. Most foundations evaporate and become a distant memory by the end of the day. This stuff holds on.  Also, I have super sensitive/breakout prone skin. This foundation does not make me break out and it despite it’s thick texture it does not clog my pores. 🙌 Lately, I am just wearing this product without additional concealer. First I apply the product under my eyes, touch up the tzone, and them go back under my eyes. No more doubling up on concealer (although corrector is never a bad idea).

Cons:

It comes in a glass bottle and it is not easy to travel with. It’s also somewhat impossible to pour a little out into a travel case.

My shade is a 6.5 which is the PERFECT shade for moderately fair olive/peach skin. I just pray they don’t ever discontinue it. Are you reading this, Clinique? It’s so hard to find a good match for olive skin. Don’t ever discontinue this shade. Please. With a cherry on top, etc.

This fabulous 2 in 1 products retails for 27.00 for a full ounce. The trick is to build up the coverage a little bit at a time. A little goes a lonnnng way. Oh, and it’s oil and fragrance free too. Perfect!

(Still here? Here is a picture after wearing for 10 hours. It’s faded under my eyes a bit, and the dressing room lighting is bad but you get the idea. All I will need is a touch-up under the eyes)
