Instagram vs Reality

I’m a makeup artist who rarely wears a great deal of makeup. Most days I run out of the house to get Smarshmucks without much makeup on at all (I bet you can’t guess that name. #slick). Many times I’m people watching, but sometimes I engage in conversation. When I tell people that in addition to grad school, one of my two or three jobs is being a makeup artist, I get a puzzled look. This is because I usually look like this:

Ok, picture non-styled hair. I’m not that brave to do no makeup AND scrub hair in this post.

My usual “I tried” look is not much more:

(Foundation, blush, mascara and a strong lip).

But today I had a conversation with a gentleman about makeup, particularly Instagram styled makeup. I explained my appreciation for the art form, but how I would never leave the house that way. This is mostly because I’m just not comfortable; however, I was looking for an excuse to procrastinate and put my nervous energy to good use. )I start the second two classes of my four classes summer tomorrow. Ay yah yahhhy.)

So here is a heavy makeup look I created and I will list the products below:

This is the amount of product I used

❣Beyond Perfecting #9 Neutral. My summertime tan color. Usually I’m a 4 in the winter, 6.5 in spring/early summer, and now 9 after a tan.

❣Chubby in the Nude: Clove as contour.

❣ Dark blush in elf quad

❣Shadows: purple from NYX on lid. Mystery, transforming pearl on lid from itcosmetics, fate nd desire blended in.

❣ Maybelline waterproof mascara

❣ Urban Decay vice lipstick in Moshpit.

Verdict: Too heavy. I think I will stick to my usual. FYI Moshpit is an awesome lipstick. I will wear it alone, without competing eyes to throw it all off.

Till next time. 💋 Smooches!

NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer =Got You Glowing

I’m confused. I’m the girl who needs her foundation oil and fragrance free or her skin freaks out either immediately (bumps) or after a day or two (cystic acne). Yet for the last week I’ve been using a concealer made with coconut oil and nothing. has. happened. Nothing. Infact, my skin looks better and has less clogging overall.

Oh, and I’m using it as foundation. Yes that’s right, it’s madness! Let’s have a look see:

I’m currently using shade 4 which is a touch dark but I feel so pale this winter that I don’t mind. Shade 3 is too perfect and I feel like I look anemic or I may pass out from the vapors.

This tube of concealer is $6.00 at Ulta. A little goes a long way, so I have a feeling it’s going to last a while
I can’t tell you why this is working out for me, but it is. Maybe the cold weather is making my skin need oil? If you’re dry, try this out. If you are combo/oily keep it minimally applied. I think applying this under the eye is not enough and it is not super flattering. However, as a glowy foundation it rules.

Check it out:

Makes dry skin happy! Now if only the cold would stop pissing me off.

Au Revoir Ipsy 👋: September’s Farewell Bag.

September’s Glam Bag was- excuse me I feel a yawn coming on. Zzzzz.

Crap. Did I fall asleep while posting? Must have been all these neutrals:

I’ve put off reviewing this bag because it’s just not that interesting. Everything about it, down to the golden, scaly bag is just bland. I appreciate the Ultra Repair Cream from First Aid Beauty. I think the NYX shadows are cute enough:

But there’s only so much of this stuff that I want. So I decided to cancel my subscription and just stick with Birchbox. Yes, I once compared Ipsy and Birchbox as the cool big sister who shows you all new makeup vs the stuffy aunt who gives you brands you never heard of. However, Birchbox is evolving and these are the reasons why I plan to stick with them.

  1. You can earn points by reviewing samples and use those points towards full size products. The point goals are realistic too. 10 points per product review. I currently have 20 dollars in points. I can get certain things for free AND shipped for free. Ipsy’s point system is harder to earn. A lot of it is about trying to hook friends on social media. I don’t want to be bothered by my friends trying to sell me their nail wraps, leggings, or lashes so I really don’t want to bother them either.
  2. You can reach human beings at Birchbox. If you have a subscription or order issue, they are prompt about responding back. Ipsy’s customer service is kind of a mystery.
  3. The brand offerings at Birchbox are of a better quality. They are even adding some Estée Lauder brands like Clinique. Ipsy has some good brands like Urban Decay, but a lot of drugstore stuff too.

So it’s been fun, Ipsy. I’ve had some cute bags and pretty makeup colors, but Birchbox is offering more substance, maturity, and stability at the moment. This sounds a lot like dating. 😕

National Lipstick Day: It’s a thing, people.

Happy National Yet Another Holiday Day! Lipstick day is a fun holiday, especially for makeup addicts like myself. It’s zero calories, unlike Hot Dog Day, but not as cool as National Ice-cream  Day which is everyday for me.

So to celebrate and distract myself from buying more lipstick #addict, I’m gonna share a low key drugstore lip look  followed by a bold luxury brand. Today’s lipstick:

NYX Matte Lipstick in Natural (e.l.f. Cosmetics liner in Nude Pink)

This lipstick has a matte texture, but it doesn’t suck the life out of you. Plus it is the perfect tone for people who whine about lipstick being too bold. I don’t understand you people.

If you do like bold lipstick, try this:

Clinique lipstick in Grape Pop

A super flattering shade for many different skin types. Creamy, lasting, and unusually badass (by Clinique standards)

So there you have it. I gotta run now and use my energy to resist buying another lipstick.

Why A Mid-tone Nude Shadow Is Everything.

Once upon a time, before Instagram, people searched for makeup tips in books. There was a magical place called Borders where you could spend your day off sitting in a comfortable chair  and read every book imaginable for free! I can’t imagine why they went out of business.

Anyway, it was from a book by the makeup artist Robert Jones, where I learned about the importance of a mid-tone matte neutral eyeshadow. This sounds boring, but bear with me.

  1. It transforms the shape of the eye.
  2. Provides a polished, no makeup makeup look.
  3. Makes more dramatic tones easier to wear.

One of my favorite mid tones is from The Autobalm Palette: California by The Balm. Since this was a limited edition item I can’t get you excited about it. P.S. Please make it a year round product (That’s my plea to the folks at The Balm.)

Here’s what it looks like, and here are some alternatives.

The NYX ones are under 5.00 each.

Let’s see how they look in comparison…

The darker NYX is a little stronger and requires a little more blending, but the lighter one is pretty close (although it is not used on the eyes here).

I use this mid tone everyday, in makeup looks like this:

But you can also use it to compliment a hint of a bold color.

Afraid to wear blue? No problem! Just apply the bold color on the lid and use your mid tone in the crease.

You see? You DO need this in your life.

NYX Wins Again: High Voltage Lipstick!

I’m killing time before the second episode of Better Call Saul. Vince Gilligan knows how to make great TV, and NYX knows how to make a great lipstick that won’t destroy your budget.
Their newest addition for spring is the HIGH VOLTAGE LIPSTICK. Excuse the all caps, but it’s just so bold it needs to be emphasized.

Let’s swatch:

I’m not sure how many colors are offered, but these are the ones I selected- so far. #addict.
*Just to give you an idea of how powerful this lipstick is, those color swatches were done with one run on the arm. That’s it!

This is the packaging:

Not the best, but for $5.99 you can’t expect much. I just hope the caps don’t pop off in my purse.

Side note: I think Kim Kardashian was born for the sole purpose of making a good crying meme.
Let’s see how they look!

I kind of love them all, but #2 makes me feel like Snow White. It’s such a rich, plum/burgundy and it contrasts nicely with my skin tone. I’m a fan.
Some features:
💋 Good staying power
💋 Does not dry the lip out
💋 Fades evenly to a stain.
Hot tip: These are on sale at Ulta for a buy one get one 50%. Plus you can use a coupon on top of it.
I told you, NYX wins again!

Procrastination Makeover: Urban Decay Smoked Palette

Oh my God! Tomorrow is NYE and my boyfriend and his sister are coming to my apartment!
Do I:
A. Clean the place up?
B. Procrastinate by playing with makeup?

Yup. That happened.

Let’s discuss!

On muh face right now:

💋Urban Decay Smoked Palette
💋Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Perversion (That came with the palette)
💋NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo
💋Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener in Light to Medium Peach.

I got the Smoked Palette during the Sephora 20% off sale in November.
It was already marked down, so by the time I got it it was just about $23.00.
Now I’ve seen it advertised in Ulta online for about $20.00.
If they still have that offer, take it and never let it go…

Let’s swatch the shades I used:

Top to Bottom:
💋Asphalt (Lower Lash)
💋Loaded (Lid)
💋Evidence (Crease/Outer V)
💋Freestyle (Blending Shade)
💋Kinky (Inner Corner/Under Brow

With the very first swipe of Loaded, I was reminded why Urban Decay shadows rule the school…

My favorite shade is actually Freestyle. It is a perfect matte peach. I could wear it everyday.

Why the smirk? Because these shadows are so badass, I can’t take myself seriously.
That’s why my favorite is the matte nudey-peach.
Because I’m lame, and proud.

Before we go, let’s discuss the lip color…
This NYX Lip Cream in San Paulo is a bright, cheery, pinky-red. I actually like the look of just the lip without eyeshadow.

That’s my happy place.

Time to finish washing this stuff off and get crackin on the cleaning!
